Random Thought: The storytelling of the History of Christianity

Our worst mistakes are our deepest chain.

-Edward Snowden

Since words mean things, here are several words that I will be using throughout this post and their definition so that we can all be on the same page:

  • Christianity: is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth (Google).
  • Christians: a person who has received Christian baptism or is a believer in Christianity (Google).
  • Orthodox Christianity: The form of Christianity maintained by the Eastern Orthodox Church (Google).
  • Catholics: members of the Roman Catholic Church (Google).
Now a days, especially in the media, whenever the topic of the history of Christianity is brought up, they love to emphasize on all the atrocities that some Christians have committed throughout the ages. For example, when the story of the Crusades are told, some how these historians forget the reasons why the Crusades started but remember the crimes those Christians committed. Let's be clear, the Crusades were horrible. It was awful and it should not have happened. It will always be one of Christianity worse period. The actions of those Christians during that period was disgusting and horrible and should not be forgotten. If history is told, the whole story should be told. I'm not ashamed of history but I want to whole truth to be told.

Random question: Why is it okay to tell the history of Christianity with all it's flaws and not do the same for other faiths?

Some even claim that Christianity caused the dark ages while ignoring the fact that Orthodox Christianity thrive during this period. I'm not saying that all Christians have been innocent or flawless throughout history. I admit some Christians have acted and are acting unchristian like. Christians are suppose to be the most forgiving, most welcoming. But to say that Christianity is wrong, that's too much. All I'm asking is that when the history of Christianity is told, please state the good, the bad and the truth. It's not all black and white.

Moreover, when people talk about the history of Christianity, they focus primarily on the Roman Catholic Church, even though Christianity is so diverse. I understand the fascination with the Catholic Church, it's the largest church with about 1.2 billion members worldwide. A lot of religious figures in the Catholic Church have committed many evil acts throughout history and the media (world wide) love to mention the Catholic Church scandals. It is as if the Catholic faith has done no good in this world.

Not all Christians practice hate. Like all faiths, Christianity has crazy members. No evil acts is ever justified regardless who does it or for what reason. All human beings are valuable. I don't agreed with Christians committing crimes in the name of God. Christians are called to follow Christ. Live as Jesus Christ lived. Forgive. As Christians, no matter what circumstances we face, we must always chose to live like Christ. Turn the other cheek. Humble ourself and lay down our lives like Christ did.

*Disclaimer: I'm a Christian. A proud one. These words are my own opinion on the topic. They may or may not change.
