Back to the Carolinas: What I Love about the DRC

When the bones are good, it doesn't matter
-Marren Morris
It's no surprise that I' am a Congolese-American. A proud one to be exact. Previously I wrote about what I love about the USA, now its about the DRC, my homeland. Here is what I love about the Democratic Republic of Congo a.k.a Congo-Kinshasa a.k.a DRC.

  • My people. Despite what we went through and are going through, we persist. We still trust in each others, ourselves and especially foreigners. Also, there are over 243 ethnic groups in the   DRC but Congolese people identify themselves first as Congolese then their tribal affiliation.
  • The hustling spirit. I've seen more people trying to manipulate me into giving them money or   sell me stuff or do things in exchange for money than begging for money.
  • The potential. The DRC and it's people have alot of potential. Potential for growth, talent,        development. The potential to be one of the world greatest power. I wish the government and   civilians see the potential, and have a vision for a better DRC and work towards that vision.
  • My culture. Although Congo has 243 tribes, they all have similarities. For example, I am a part of two tribes since my parents are from different tribes. And yet the custom for their traditional wedding are exactly the same just in different languages.
  • My history. I' am 100% Congolese. I was born there. My parents, siblings, grandparents, great grandparents, and ancestors are from the DRC. There is no need for 23 and Me test. My roots are in the DRC. My culture, custom, tradition and life began there. The DRC is a part of my foundation. That part is good, pure and true
