Story time: my experience of moving to America...the short version

Life doesn't bring back what is gone, nor does it bring back time. Either you live what you live in its time, or don't cry because you didn't live it.

Like every immigrant families, my family came to the U.S for better opportunities and  my homeland was going through a civil war at the time (which would lead to more wars to follow).
My mother worked 3 jobs to support us (she worked as a housekeeper, janitor, and gas station cashier) without any help  (she has NEVERT been on welfare or other government social service assistances) nor did she know how to speak English when she moved here. The English she learned was from her work. Through all her hard work, she was able to bring my siblings and I to the U.S  (she came first to the USA).

When I moved to the U.S,  school was awful. I was constantly made fun of because I could not speak English and I was from Africa. I truly hated my first school year in the U.S. Also, I did not understand anything at school except math, I had to go to summer school which was great. I learned how to speak English there and actually made friends.

Since we lived paycheck to paycheck, we didn't get the chance to have a lot of things nor do things that other families did but my mom made sure that we had clothes, food (3 meals a day plus snacks) and had a home.

Although, we haven't achieve financial success, we have come a long way from having no place to sleep.
